A Note From Gene:

Cartooning: Shortcuts, Formulas, & Cheap Tricks is a revolutionary teaching tool for learning cartooning. A lot of videos don't take advantages of the unique tools of video. They just film a class in session. Personally watching those type of videos always made me feel left out. I was jealous of the students who were actually in the same room with the teacher.
As the teacher draws a picture, his hand is in the way so you don't see the picture while it is being created, but just after. With the aid of a computer and a graphics tablets, I let you see the drawing as it develops with no hand in the way.
Over the years I have taught many cartooning and animation classes and I have also taught art teachers how to teach drawing to students . I have listened to their feedback and incorporated it into the original VHS incarnation of this video. Each lesson is less than ten minutes long so it can fit into a teacher's busy schedule. (I recommend you watch the video in little bits at a time and not try to watch it all at once).
Now that it is in DVD, you can jump to your favorite sections and learn in the order you prefer. If you play the DVD on a computer, you can print the slideshow, which consists of guides such as templates for drawing heads and bodies, and blank comic book pages so you can draw your own comics along with the video or after you complete all the lessons.
I'm happy with how it came out. If you have any suggestions, I would be happy to include them in a second volume of Cartooning: Shortcuts, Formulas, & Cheap Tricks.

The tutoring lasts for two months. It begins when I get an email from you saying you have looked through the video. I will give you assignments referring to the video. Draw it on paper and scan it unless you have a graphics tablet and stylus. Send me a jpeg. I will print it out, correct it and email the corrected drawing back to you.

In the cases of animation, email me the sequential drawings as individual jpegs. I will print them, flip them and email back corrected drawings. When all your animation is approved you can save it as an mpeg or Quicktime or Flash file and send it to me. Feel free to email as many questions as you want during the two months.
